 1984年成立于芬兰赫尔辛基的Stratovarius没有因为不停的人员更替而频繁变化自己的音乐风格。最初的乐队成员是：主唱Tuomo Lassila，贝斯手John Vihervaauml以及吉他手Staffan Straaringahlman。Timo Tolkki于随后一年加入乐队担任主唱。87年，乐队完成了第一盘样带，里面收录了“Future Shock”、“Fright Night”和“Night Screamers”。之后，键盘手Antti Itkonen加入乐队。 95年的欧洲、日本巡演中，乐队加入了新鼓手F6rg Michael(Running Wild成员)和新键盘手Jens Johansson(Yngwie Malmsteen band和Dio成员)。《Fourth Dimension》成功后，Timo Tolkki和Timo Kotipelto决定发展乐队的音乐方向。新鼓手J鰎g Michael和新键盘手Jens Johansson加入乐队。

Stratovarius早期的音乐与如今差别甚大，如今的风格发展——旋律化而带有强烈的古典音乐元素。Stratovarius最终以1989年5月发行的首张专辑“Fright Night”登上金属音乐圈的舞台。Stratovarius的第二专辑名为“Stratovarius II”，在芬兰发行于1992年年初.Stratovarius的第三张专辑“Dreamspace”在1994年的2月和3月于全球范围内发行，这张专辑发行后广受赞誉，再一次提升了乐队的名望.乐队的第四张专辑“Fourth Dimension”完全由Timo Kotipelto担任主唱.乐队第五张专辑的录制混合工作于赫尔辛基的Finnvox录音棚展开，这张专辑再一次推动了Stratovarius的音乐发展，加入了Johansson和Michael耳目一新的音乐演奏和工作态度，使得Stratovarius的音乐向戏曲化、旋律化以及交响化的金属音乐发展，这也是乐队首次尝试使用40人的唱诗班以及20人规模的管弦乐队参加音乐的制作，接下来一张专辑“Visions”发行于1997年4月，一经发行便立刻登上芬兰专辑排行第五的位置，并在前40的位置上逗留了24周之久。“1998年4月Stratovarius开始为他们的下一张专辑写歌排练，这是他们的第七张专辑了——“Destiny”，这张专辑与1998年春季和夏季间，在芬兰的Finnvox录音棚录制完成，并于1998年10月5日正式发行。专辑的第一首单曲被做成一张EP名为“SOS”，发行于8月17日，发行后以极快的速度窜上芬兰在EP榜排名第三的位置。更奇怪的是“Destiny”在芬兰的专辑榜已经在星期四爬到了第一的宝座，这还领先于官方发行的速度。

接下来的1999年Stratovarius再次以这张“Destiny”突破20000张的黄金销量，不过这只是个信号，好事情还没真正到来。同年Stratovarius在芬兰金属乐杂志“SFP”中的读者调查中被评为芬兰年度最佳组合，而他们的“SOS”也被评为国内最佳MV，两位Timos被选为“Wondeful Person”——总之，Stratovarius在那年收到了无数的荣誉。

以Timo Tolkki高超快速流畅的吉他、Jens Johansson优美的键盘和Jorg Michael精准狂踩的双大鼓，加上团员们"Keep melody in Metal!"的一贯心愿，短短几年內便快速地累积人气，並掳获广大乐迷们的心，成功地建立起属于Stratovarius的业！
